Base64 & URL Encoder
Encode and decode Base64, percent-encoding and hex — entirely in your browser.
About the Base64 & URL Encoder
Convert text to and from Base64, the URL-safe Base64URL variant, percent-encoding and hexadecimal. Encoding goes through UTF-8, so emoji and non-Latin scripts survive the round trip — something the browser's built-in btoa cannot manage, since it only handles latin1. Decoding accepts either Base64 alphabet with or without padding, because tokens arrive both ways, and reports binary results as a hex dump rather than returning unreadable replacement characters. Base64 is an encoding and not encryption: it is reversible by anyone and protects nothing, which is worth stating plainly because it is widely misused as though it did.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Encoding and decoding run in your browser with no network request, which is why this is a reasonable place to decode something sensitive.
Why not just use btoa and atob?
Those two only handle latin1. Any character outside it — an emoji, an accented letter, Japanese text — either throws or round-trips to the wrong bytes. This tool encodes via UTF-8 first, so the result is correct for any input.
What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?
Base64URL replaces the + and / characters with - and _ so the result is safe in a URL or filename, and it conventionally omits the = padding. It is what JWTs use. Decoding here accepts both alphabets automatically.
Base64 is not encryption, is it?
No, and this matters. Base64 is an encoding, fully reversible by anyone, with no key involved. It makes binary data safe to put in text; it provides no confidentiality whatsoever. Never use it to protect a secret.
Why does decoding sometimes show a hex dump?
Because the decoded bytes are not valid UTF-8 text — you have decoded something binary, like an image or a compressed blob. Showing a hex dump says that plainly, where showing replacement characters would look like a tool failure.
