Your input is converted to CIE Lab color space, then compared to every color in the database using the ΔE (CIE76) distance formula. Lab-based distance is perceptually uniform — colors that look similar to humans are numerically close.
ΔE (delta E) is the standard measure of color difference. ΔE < 1 is imperceptible; 1–3 is noticeable to trained eyes; 3–10 is clear but related; > 10 is a different color family.
